REBRANDING AUSTIN PUBLIC SPACES
Semester Project Fall 2022
REPUBLIC SQUARE
RESEARCH
Republic Square is right in the heart of Austin downtown, holding a cultural history for many of the neighborhoods early residents. In order to bring back life to Republic Square I conducted photo, primary, and secondary research to gain more insight into the park. I compared it to other outdoor outdoor spaces in Austin to see what the park had to offer. As well as visiting the sight throughout the season to learn about the community and flow of activity. After speaking with employees, vendors, visitors, and farmers market regulars I knew that Republic Square was ready for new visual identity and experience.
During my interviews and visits to the park I learned that many felt that the park was looked over and needed some up keep. Many of the park visuals were disorganized and did not attract the foot traffic of the busy of the city life of surrounding streets. However, the park attracted many for the weekend Farmers Market bringing many of the community together.
SYNTHESIS
After gathering information about Republic Square I began to create a visual identity as well as events to enhance the overall park experience. To help solve the slow day to day traffic of the park I proposed a social media campaign involving weekly community activities. Since Covid Republic Square had not brought back up any social media or scheduled events like other parks in the area. Bring back a digital presence would allow the park to reach-out to others through scheduled live music, yoga, food trucks, and farmer market.
